How to Read a Bike Size Chart ( With Cm-to-Ft Conversions)

To use a bike size chart, look for the bike size that corresponds to your height and inseam length. The right bike size for you may differ depending on the type of bike in question.

The easiest way to decide what size bicycle you need is to use a bike chart. A bike size chart is like a cheat sheet that helps you figure out what size bicycle frame best suits you based on your height, inseam length, and sometimes the type of bike (road, mountain, hybrid, etc.).

Types of Bike Size Charts

The most common bike size charts are road bike size charts, mountain bike size charts, and hybrid bike size charts.

Road Bike Size Chart (cm and inches)

Height Inseam (in) Road bike Size (cm)
4'10"–5'0" 25"–27" 47–49 cm
5'0"–5'3" 27"–29" 49–51 cm
5'3"–5'6" 29"–31" 51–53cm
5'6"–5'9" 31"–33" 54–55 cm
5'9"–6'0" 33"–34" 56–58cm
6'0"–6'3" 34"–36" 58–60 cm
6'3"–6'6" 36"–38" 61–63 cm

Consider Road Bikes

Road bikes are lightweight, which makes them best for speed and endurance. Here’s why you should consider a road bike for cycling:

  • They are great for long-distance rides, keeping your heart rate up.
  • Riding a road bike also encourages high-intensity efforts like hill climbs and sprints.

Tips for Choosing Choosing Bike Size

1. Smaller Bikes for Racing, Bigger Bikes for Comfort.

If you are between two bike sizes and unsure which size best fits you:

  • Go for the smaller bike size if you want agility, racing, or an aggressive posture.
  • If you want comfort, cruising, or longer rides, go for the larger bike size

2. Understand Mountain Bike Sizing

  • For mountain bikes, some sizing uses S/M/L instead of inches.
  • Always check manufacturer charts—geometry can vary.

3. Check Proper Standover Height

Ensure at least 1–2 inches of clearance between your body and the top tube when standing flat-footed.

How to Measure Bike Frame Size Based on Your Inseam

You can also use this handy formula to estimate frame size:

  • Road Bike (cm): Inseam (cm) × 0.67
  • Mountain Bike (in): Inseam (cm) × 0.66 ÷ 2.54

How to Measure Inseam

A person’s inseam is the distance between their crotch to the floor when they are standing. To measure your inseam, you need a hardcover book (or a similar object), a tape measure, a flat wall, and (preferably) a friend to help you.

Here is how to measure your inseam in a way that would help you pick the right bike size:

  1. Stand by the wall, barefoot with your back straight and heels touching the wall.
  2. Place the book between your legs and slide it up firmly into your crotch (the objective is to mimic where the bike seat would go).
  3. Make sure the book is level: the spine must be vertical, and the bottom edge must be flat against the wall.
  4. Mark the top of the book on the wall. If you have help, have someone else measure from the floor up to the edge of the book.
  5. Record the measurement, and that is your inseam length, in inches or centimeters.

Why Do You Need a Bike Size Chart?

  • Comfort: The right size means you're not stretching awkwardly or cramped up.
  • Efficiency: A properly sized bike improves power transfer and control.
  • Injury Prevention: Too small? Your knees get crunched. Too big? You overextend.
  • Confidence: A good fit means more balance, better handling, and more fun.
